Brush – Planes and Anatomy

In this exercise Doug breaks down an arm into its basic planes then expands upon them with more detailed feathering and rendering.

In this lesson Doug will start to explore various head lighting scenarios and how to tackle them with the brush. 

Brush – Planes and Crosshatching

In this exercise, Doug will take you through more fundamental concepts of inking (and art). Demonstrating techniques of feathering, tone building and brush handling, he will continue to guide you along your journey in ink.

Brush – Compositional Elements

At this point in the phase, Doug Stambaugh, a teacher of inking at Watts Atelier, will be taking over for the remaining brush technical exercises. In this exercise he introduces you to basic compositional elements that you will find useful when inking. 

Quill – Value Scales

After having completed several exercises in tone building, it is time to move on to the final technical lesson with quill pen. 

Quill – Line Practice I

Now that we are done with the ball point pen section, it's time to start getting used to inking in quill. One of the best ways to start to understand this tool is to practice these technical exercises. 

Ball Point Pen – Landscape

Moving on from animals, we will start to tackle landscape. In this lesson you will learn how to indicate trees, rocks and atmospheric perspective.

Ball Point Pen – Animals – Tigers

Continuing to explore sketching animals in ink, we will move on with tigers. Jeff will provide more insight on how to handle and layer the feline form utilizing tech pens and ball point pens. 

Ball Point Pen – Architecture

Now that you have tacked some basic heads and figures, you will start to understand how to approach layering architecture with ball point pen.

Closing Thoughts

In this last video, Erik will close out the phase and provide some information on the online forums.
